Most Reformed men couldn't effectively preach to a "big steeple" university church. A few could. Machen was among them, with legitimate credentials that could not be attacked, including studying in Germany and learning German liberalism firsthand.
Probably a good lesson here. Don't take gig with a congregation of egg heads.
