I think that is is extremely important for ruling elders, in addition to teaching elders, to attend General Assembly, and having been in the PCA since it was started (Westminster PCA, Roanoke, VA) I know that this was an important feature of the new denomination over the PCUS and it hierarchy of teaching elders and their “pastor’s clubs”. All churches were encouraged to send both ruling elders and teaching elders to GA, versus only a select few from the bigger churches in each presbytery. I have been concerned as the ratio of TEs to REs has shifted away from 50:50 to become lopsided in favor of TEs, although it seems to have gotten a bit better these last two years. As Brad Isbell states “REs are naturally and necessarily a more diverse lot than our TEs.” They bring different perspectives from a wide variety of educational levels and work/occupational experiences that can offer another view of what is in front of GA to be voted on.
